About the Species:

The Giant Peacock Moth (Saturnia pyri) is Europe’s largest moth, and a truly majestic species to rear. With its bold eyespots and huge wingspan, it’s a favourite among breeders and collectors alike.

Native to: Southern Europe, Mediterranean regions

Flight period: April to June (main generation)

Wingspan: Up to 20cm

Generations: Single-brooded, though a partial second brood is occasionally possible

Not found in the wild in the UK

Larvae Details:

Stage: Supplied at L1 (first instar), freshly hatched

Quantity: 15 larvae per order

Food Plant Provided: Fresh Hawthorn (Crataegus) included for travel

Shipping Method: Carefully packed in a ventilated tub with food, wrapped in bubble wrap within a sturdy cardboard box

Handling: Open immediately on arrival and transfer to a suitable rearing container

Host Plants:

These larvae are highly polyphagous and will readily feed on a wide range of trees and shrubs. For this batch, they are feeding well on:

Crataegus (Hawthorn) – Provided

Other acceptable hosts include:

Acer, Alnus, Fraxinus, Juglans, Populus, Prunus, Salix, Liquidambar, and others

Rearing Instructions:

Container: Use ventilated plastic tubs or mesh cages for early instars

Cleanliness: Remove uneaten food and frass daily to prevent mould

Later Instars: Provide fresh host plant regularly and upgrade to larger enclosures as larvae grow

Pupation: Allow larvae to spin their silken cocoons undisturbed in dry, ventilated conditions

Overwintering: Cocoons must be chilled (e.g. shed or fridge) for a minimum of 3 months to enable proper development and emergence in spring
