🪴 Basic Caterpillar Rearing Tips:
• Foodplants: Best reared on privet. Always use fresh, pesticide-free leaves and replace daily.
• Housing: A spacious, well-ventilated container or mesh cage is ideal. Clean regularly to reduce mould.
• Humidity: Moderate humidity preferred. Light misting is fine – avoid excessive dampness.
• Growth: Fast-growing and very active. These larvae will get large and need plenty of food and space.
• Pupation: Larvae burrow into loose soil to pupate. Keep pupae cool and dry over winter, frost-free.
The Privet Hawk Moth is a true showstopper – large, bold, and deeply rewarding to rear.
Perfect for garden rearing, classroom projects, or anyone fascinated by the life cycles of our native wildlife.
