About the Species:

The Puss Moth (Cerura vinula) is a spectacular native species, both beautiful and bizarre. While the adult moth resembles a fluffy feline, the caterpillars are unforgettable—vivid green with purple accents, waving twin tail filaments in a unique defensive display.

Native to: UK and much of Europe

Flight period: May to July

Wingspan: Up to 75mm

Generations: Single-brooded (univoltine)

Larvae Details:

Quantity: -10 larvae per order

Shipping Method: Carefully packed in a ventilated tub with fresh food, protected by bubble wrap in a sturdy outer box

Handling: Open immediately on arrival and transfer to a suitable container

Host Plants:

Puss Moth larvae feed almost exclusively on:

Poplar (Populus spp.)

Willow (Salix spp.)

Please ensure you have access to these fresh host plants before ordering.

Rearing Instructions:

Container: Use a well-ventilated plastic box for early instars

Cleaning: Replace food and remove waste daily to avoid mould

Later Instars: As larvae grow, move to larger containers with good airflow

Pupation: Larvae will spin strong cocoons on sticks or container sides; allow to harden undisturbed

Overwintering: Cocoons require a cold period of 3+ months (shed or fridge) to emerge the following spring
